Project overview
Context
This individual project explored the differences between human, machine and AI-generated translations in the field of planetary health.
The objective was to evaluate the quality of several Spanish translations, select context-appropriate terminology, produce a hybrid translation and communicate its central message through an environmental awareness poster.

Process description
Tools Used
Microsoft Word was used to compare the three Spanish translations, build the terminology table and write the final adapted version.
Canva and Adobe Photoshop were then used to create the final Spanish-language poster. Canva helped structure the layout and visual hierarchy, while Photoshop was used for image editing and final visual adjustments.
Methodology
I first compared three Spanish translations of the same English source text.
I analysed differences in grammar, fluency, terminology, register and overall naturalness. The aim was not only to identify the "best" translation, but to understand where each version worked well or introduced awkward wording, calques or terminology that did not fully fit the context.
I then compared the main specialised terms in a terminology table and selected the Spanish equivalents that seemed the most accurate and natural for the topic of planetary health.
From this analysis, I created my own hybrid translation by keeping the strongest formulations from the different versions and rewriting the parts that needed more adaptation.
The final poster was then designed around a medical metaphor to make the environmental message more immediate and visually understandable.

I identified the human, machine-translated and AI-generated texts by examining grammatical errors, literal structures, register and terminological precision.
Spanish Content Adapter
I selected the Spanish terms that best matched the context of planetary health and produced a coherent hybrid adaptation.
Visual Communication Designer
I transformed the central metaphor of the planet as a sick patient into an environmental awareness poster written entirely in Spanish.

Spanish Translation Analysis
A comparative analysis identifying human, machine and AI-generated translations through grammatical, stylistic and terminological evidence.
Terminology Table & Hybrid Translation
A terminology table comparing several Spanish equivalents for the same English source terms and expressions. The aim was to identify which options were the most accurate, natural and appropriate for planetary health communication.
For each term, I compared the different proposals, looked at their meaning and register, and selected the formulation that best fitted the context. This work then helped me build my own hybrid translation by combining the strongest choices from the different versions rather than keeping one translation as a whole.

Critical reflections - Réflexion critique
Acquis
Ce projet en espagnol m’a surtout appris à ne pas confondre fluidité et qualité. Une traduction peut sembler naturelle alors qu'elle contient en réalité des erreurs grammaticales ou une terminologie mal adaptée au contexte.
J’ai également mieux compris le rôle de la langue cible. Il ne suffit pas de trouver un équivalent espagnol compréhensible : il faut choisir celui qui correspond au domaine, au public et au registre du texte.
Difficultés rencontrées
La partie la plus complexe a été de distinguer la traduction humaine de la version générée par ChatGPT. Pour moi, les deux étaient globalement fluides. Par contre, la traduction automatique comportait, elle, des structures très littérales et une erreur grammaticale évidente (même sans être natif en espagnol).
J’ai dû revenir aux formulations précises et comparer le vocabulaire, la syntaxe et le degré d’adaptation de chaque texte.
Mon analyse m’a finalement conduite à identifier le texte 3 comme la version institutionnelle, le texte 2 comme la traduction DeepL et le texte 1 comme la version générée par ChatGPT.
Choix méthodologiques
Pour comparer les textes, je me suis appuyée sur plusieurs critères plutôt que sur un seul indice : formulations naturelles ou non, expressions traduites littéralement, erreurs grammaticales, précision terminologique et cohérence du registre.
Pour le tableau terminologique, j’ai privilégié les équivalents qui fonctionnaient réellement dans un texte de vulgarisation sur la santé planétaire.
Par exemple, área de distribución de los mosquitos est plus précis que alcance de los mosquitos, et tráfico ilegal de especies silvestres correspond mieux au sens de illegal wildlife trading.
Enfin, pour l’affiche, j’ai adopté le thème de la "planète malade" afin de rendre le message immédiatement compréhensible : le réchauffement climatique devient une fièvre, la déforestation affaiblit les poumons de la planète et la pollution touche ses ressources vitales.
Compétences mobilisées
Analyse critique de traductions
J’ai comparé plusieurs versions d’un même texte sans me limiter à leur correction apparente. J’ai cherché ce qui relevait d’une traduction littérale, d’une reformulation générative ou d’un véritable travail d’adaptation.
Terminologie spécialisée
J’ai sélectionné les termes espagnols les plus adaptés au domaine de la santé planétaire, en tenant compte de leur précision, du contexte et du public visé.
Adaptation en espagnol
La traduction hybride demandait de construire une version cohérente à partir de plusieurs propositions. Le but n'était pas de choisir la meilleure phrase dans chaque colonne, mais de produire un texte qui fonctionne réellement en espagnol.
Évaluation des outils de traduction
Ce projet m’a permis de mieux identifier les limites respectives de la traduction automatique et de l’IA générative. Je me suis rendue compte que DeepL a tendance à produire des structures trop proches de l’anglais, tandis qu’un texte généré par IA peut sembler convaincant tout en restant vague ou assez artificiel.
Communication visuelle
J'ai crée une affiche organisée autour d’une image centrale, de trois symptômes et d’un message d’action. Je souhaitais réaliser une affiche claire qui permette de vulgariser l'idée d'une planète "malade" avec une petite touche humoristique.
Communication en espagnol
L’ensemble du projet a mobilisé la compréhension, l’analyse, la reformulation et la création de contenus en espagnol, aussi bien dans un registre terminologique que dans un poster visant à sensibiliser le public.
Pistes d’amélioration
Je compléterais le tableau par une source et une justification courte pour chaque terme retenu. Cela rendrait la démarche plus rigoureuse selon moi.
Concernant l’affiche, j’allégerais légèrement la partie centrale. Le concept fonctionne, mais la citation, les symptômes et le slogan attirent tous l'attention au même niveau. Une hiérarchie plus nette rendrait le message plus immédiat.
